Burundi Dushime Single Origin Espresso

A vivacious single origin coffee that truly flourishes in espresso form, Dushime came to us by way of our friends at JNP Coffee in Burundi.

Dushime means “let’s be thankful” in Kirundi, one of the primary languages spoken in Burundi. At JNP Coffee, Dushime represents more than just gratitude—it’s a share of the premium earned from high-quality specialty coffee in the global marketplace.

Origin Story

Turihamwe Washing Station

This coffee, referred to as Turihamwe Dushime, was produced by women farmers in the Ngozi Province of northern Burundi—an area renowned for producing some of the best coffee in the country. It was initially brought to our attention by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian through her company, JNP Coffee. Founded in 2012, JNP Coffee focuses on promoting gender equity in East Africa by educating women farmers on high-quality coffee production and providing them with leadership and financial literacy training. The company also pays premiums to women farmers, ensuring quality while promoting sustainability.

The coffee was processed at the Turihamwe Washing Station, owned and operated by Turihamwe Turashobora—a small investor group founded in 2019 by seven women coffee producers who pooled their resources to build the wet mill.

Why We Love This Coffee

This marks the fourth consecutive year that we’re featuring coffee from the Turihamwe washing station. This year’s lot features an effervescent acidity and syrupy body that are complemented by flavors of blackberry, tamarind, and date.

While there are many variables that contribute to dialing in espresso, here are the parameters that have been yielding the best results in our lab:

1:2.4 coffee to water ratio in 26 seconds
