Costa Rica Sumava de Lourdes Black Moon

This San Roque variety single origin coffee—a naturalized variation of the celebrated SL28 coffee variety—was processed using the farm’s unique “Black Moon” method and offers up a signature vibrancy and concentrated fruit complexity with every sip.

Sumava de Lourdes was awarded their first ever Cup of Excellence win in 2016 and just received another COE award this past season, this time for a San Roque variety lot much like this one!

Origin Story

Francisco Mena

This coffee was produced in Costa Rica’s West Valley growing region by our friend Francisco Mena on his farm Sumava de Lourdes. The farm is named after the mountainous Sumava National Park in the Czech Republic, with the name Lourdes referring to the micro-region Lourdes de Naranjo.

The farm is divided into two main sections – Monte Lourdes and Monte Llano Bonito. This coffee hails from a subsection of Monte Lourdes, on a plot dubbed El Kinkajou, which is playfully named after an adorable tropical rainforest mammal sometimes called a “honey bear” that is seen on the farm. This plot was planted with 6,000 coffee trees that are locally known as San Roque. The cultivar is a naturalized variation of the celebrated SL28 variety, which was selected and stabilized in Kenya by Scott Laboratories in the 1930s.

After years of planning and preparation, Sumava was awarded a first-place win in the 2016 Costa Rica Cup of Excellence competition, with more accolades to follow in subsequent years. This past season Sumava received another Cup of Excellence award, this time for a San Roque variety lot from El Kinkajou!

Why We Love This Coffee

The coffee underwent a unique processing method referred to as Black Moon. Using fully ripe fruit, the coffee cherries are allowed to dry whole, under shade for 3 days, then pulped and fermented in tanks for another 3 days, before finish-drying in the sun for 2 weeks. It is a variation of the honey process since some of the fruit pulp remains on the seed when drying.

In addition to producing award-winning coffee, Francisco also founded and manages Exclusive Coffees, an exporter of Costa Rica coffee. He is a champion of Costa Rica’s “micro-mill revolution,” working with over one hundred micro-mills scattered throughout Costa Rica. Before the proliferation of these tiny benificios, producers would sell their coffee at prevailing market prices to larger mills, where it would be combined with other lots. Over the last couple of decades however, producers have been constructing their own small-scale mills and processing their own coffee, gaining access to higher and more stable prices.
