Origin Story

Biru Bekele Washing Station

We are pleased to present a coffee that has been a staple on Equator’s menu and a team favorite since 2013, Ethiopia Ardi Natural. The coffee is grown by smallholder farmers and processed at the Biru Bekele washing station in Southern Ethiopia’s Guji region. We’ve had the privilege of visiting the farmers who produce Ardi and see first-hand the high quality, oversight, and care that goes into this natural sun-dried coffee.

Ardi is sourced by long time Equator friend and founder of Keffa Coffee, Samuel Demisse. Keffa is an importing business dedicated to sourcing high quality coffees with transparent and ethical supply chains. Samuel was born in Ethiopia, and his father was a coffee professional who taught him about the industry at a young age. On the ground in Ethiopia, Keffa’s licensed Q-grader Tsega Melesse cups every lot before it is prepped for export to ensure the highest quality standards.

Why We Love This Coffee

Ardi is processed using the natural method, where after harvesting the fruit is left to dry on the beans fully intact, imparting distinct berry-like flavors to the coffee. The Keffa team has been perfecting this process for well over a decade, culminating in a clean, fruit-forward flavor profile that doesn’t overpower the classic floral and sweet characteristics of Ethiopia Heirloom varieties.

The inspiration behind this coffee’s name comes from the discovery of Ardipithecus Ramidus, the oldest hominid skeleton ever found. The fossil, dubbed Ardi, is 4.4 million years old and was unearthed in Ethiopia’s Great Rift Valley, which is where the Guji region lies. Sweet, fruity natural processed Ethiopian coffees such as this one often change people’s perception of what coffee can taste like; similarly Ardipithecus Ramidus has changed the perception of human evolution, as it is believed the species could be a link between modern humans and our distant ancestors.
