Origin Story

Multiple Producers, Kevenka Coffees

This coffee was processed by the founders of Kevenka Coffees, Kevin and Kenny Soewondo. As both producers and exporters of premium Indonesian coffee, they are dedicated to offering and generating access to unique and traceable lots through a curated network of producers who are open to change and committed to enhancing quality.

Currently, Kevenka is focused on the island of Java but is expanding its operations to other Indonesian coffee-producing regions, such as Sumatra. The company operates a receiving station and processing facility in the Mount Ijen region, situated on the eastern side of Java. Additionally, Kevenka runs a dry mill in Surabaya, giving them full control over the production process. This marks the fourth year we have offered coffee from their group.

Why We Love This Coffee

Unlike Sumatra, the most well-known Indonesian coffee-producing island famed for its distinct wet-hulled coffees, Java has traditionally used the washed method to process its beans. However, the team at Kevenka Coffees has been working with their producing partners to experiment with alternative processing methods rarely seen in Indonesia. This particular lot was processed using a unique variation of the natural method, where the coffee cherries undergo fermentation in an anaerobic environment before being dried on raised beds. The result is a fruit-forward flavor profile that's uncommon in Indonesian coffees. Additionally, the area faces water scarcity, and this processing method uses only a fraction of the water required for Java's traditional washed method.
