Origin Story
Nawin Yaesorkoo & Beanspire
Nawin Yaesorkoo is recognized as one of the most innovative coffee farmers and processors in Thailand. He cultivates coffee on his family farm in Hua Chang and oversees post-harvest processing at his mill in Mae Suai. Mae Suai is one of Thailand's largest coffee-growing regions, home to 500 households of the Akha hill tribe. These farmers grow various coffee varieties, including CatuaĂ, Typica, Chiang Mai, and SJ133. The coffee produced in Mae Suai is processed using the natural or dry method, where the coffee cherry is left to dry fully intact on the beans, imparting a sweet and fruit-forward flavor profile.
Coffee farming in Thailand is a relatively new industry, attracting the attention of young farmers and entrepreneurs. The country's coffee history began in the 1970s, when an opium eradication project introduced the first coffee trees. The initiative to reforest degraded lands and replace illicit crops with coffee and other alternatives has proven to be highly successful.
We source Mae Suai Natural through our partners at Beanspire Coffee, an exporter founded by Fuadi Pitsuwan and Jane Kittiratanapaiboon. Both are part of the younger generation driving the growth of Thailand's coffee industry. Thailand stands out as a coffee-producing country due to its thriving specialty cafe and roaster scene. Despite this, domestic demand for coffee often exceeds the nation's production capacity, and only 5% of Thailand's specialty coffee is exported each year, while the rest is enjoyed by local coffee enthusiasts.

Why We Love This Coffee
Chiang Rai is Thailand’s northernmost province, situated in the Golden Triangle where the borders of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand meet. Historically, this region's high mountains were central to the country's opium cultivation and smuggling routes. However, crops like coffee, bananas, coconuts, and pineapples have now replaced illicit farming, offering environmentally and socially sustainable alternatives.
The city of Chiang Rai, the largest in northern Thailand, has a rich history shaped by the various dynasties that once ruled Southeast Asia. Recent reforestation projects have helped restore the mountains around the city, and Thailand’s younger generation sees the potential in farming quality coffee as a viable path to success for landowners. Farms in the area are conveniently located near cities, ensuring easy access for processing and maintaining high-quality standards.
