Why We Love This Coffee

Originally from Yemen, the Bourbon variety is a naturally occurring Typica variant with complex fruit flavors. The name Bourbon comes from an island in the Indian Ocean (now known as Réunion) where the variety was planted in the 1700s. Until the mid-19th century Bourbon did not leave the island, but beginning in the mid-1800s, the variety spread to new parts of the world as the missionaries moved to establish footholds in Africa and the Americas.

The Bourbon variety was introduced to Brazil around 1860, and from there rapidly spread north into other parts of South and Central America. Here it became mixed with other Bourbon-related varieties, introduced from India as well as Ethiopian landraces. Today, there are many Bourbon-like varieties found in East Africa, but none exactly match the distinct Bourbon variety that found in Latin America.

Good Coffee, Better Planet

El Jardín is Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC®). Regenerative agriculture is a practice of holistic farming where everything is seen as interconnected and vital, and that can build resilience to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect the future of coffee and our planet.

ROC® was established in 2017 to promote holistic agriculture practices in an all-encompassing certification that champions three pillars:

Soil Health & Land Management
Animal Welfare
Farmer & Worker Fairness

Climate change is disproportionately affecting the tropical and subtropical regions where coffee is grown:

50% of global land area suitable for coffee production may be lost by 2050 due to climate change

60% of coffee species are considered at high risk of extinction

25M smallholder coffee growers are at risk of losing their primary source of income due to declining coffee yields
